Setting up a "Poop Area" for your Dog Inside the House

It may not be feasible to take your pet dog outdoors every time he feels the urge to urinate or defecate. Hence, it is essential to have a "poop area" inside the house itself especially for your dog's nature calls. Doing so will ensure that you dog does not pee and poop all over your house, while spoiling your furniture and furnishings.

Potty training your pet can be an easy job if done with the right amount of dedication and patience. A total commitment will be needed from your side to succeed in teaching your dog the appropriate place to pee and poop. Similarly, you need to bear in mind that your pet may take a long time to learn things. So, you will need to be patient and tolerant in case of your pet's accidents and mistakes.

Start by observing the indications given by your dog when he feels the urge to eliminate wastes from his body. Most of the dogs will start getting restless and move in circles during such times. Other dogs may start scratching and sniffing at the door or ground. You need to keep an eye on all such signs. Whenever your pet displays such signs, immediately guide him towards his "poop area". Doing this time and again will ensure that your pet gets accustomed to the whole process of urinating and defecating at a particular place.

Also keep in mind, the time when most dogs need to use the poop area. Usually, dogs will need to relieve themselves early in the morning, after meals and after exercise. Hence, you need to guide your pet towards his poop area during such time of the day. It is also a good idea to ask him to do his stuff immediately before you retire to bed.

Always remember to praise your dog when he does it correctly. How you treat your dog's mistake will have a huge impact on the success of your training process. A good way to handle such accidents is by telling him that he did a wrong thing, in a command at least thrice. Next, get on with cleaning the mess created in front of your dog. After that, bring your dog to his poop area and show him the appropriate place to do such thing. Physical punishment or angry yelling at the dog will not serve any purpose in such matters. It will only confuse your dog further and make him grow more anxious, thus prolonging the learning time.

Repeating the process time and again will help your dog understand the right way and place to eliminate his body wastes. Positive reinforcement will certainly result in effective potty training of your dog and leave your house stink - free!
