Potty Train your Chihuahua from a Young Age
Training a dog can be made relatively simple, if done with dedication and patience. Potty training requires complete commitment from the trainer, whose patience might be tested from time to time. However, you will be successful in training your Chihuahua dog if you follow certain simple guidelines and recommendations.
Timing is very important while giving toilet training to your pet. Start potty training your dog when he is still a young puppy. Most people agree that 7 weeks is the ideal time to begin potty training for your Chihuahua. However, some people feel that 7 weeks is a little too early to start potty training your dog. Nevertheless, to be on a safer side, you can begin the training when your puppy younger. As young minds tend to grasp thing quicker. But, do remember that accidents are bound to happen during the training period.
Using a kennel or a crate is a good way to start training your Chihuahua. Putting your pet dog in a crate will restrict his moments and create an own personal space for your dog. As a result, your pet's natural instinct will stop him from urinating and defecating in his personal space and soiling it. Hence, your dog will learn to control his nature calls till he is taken out of the crate. Do ensure, that you take your pet outdoors immediately after you free him from the crate.
Establishing a schedule also helps in expediting the potty training process of your pet dog. On scheduled times, take your pet outdoors to eliminate the wastes from his body. Dogs usually feel the urge of peeing and urinating when they wake up in the morning, after they consume their food and after a heavy session of play or exercise. Hence, make sure that you take them outside during such times on a routine basis.
Communication your wants to the dog is also equally important. You need to effectively let your dog know as to what is expected out of him. You can use hand gestures or verbal commands to communicate with him. Setting up common commands such as "Go Poop", "Go Pee", "Go outside" can be quite useful while teaching your pet.
Another secret of successfully training your pet dog is to praise him whenever he does the right thing. At the same time, you need to remember that occasional accidents will occur. You will have be tolerant enough at such times and ensure that you do not shout back at your dog. Physical form of punishment also needs to be avoided at any cost. All you need to do is communicate in a firm yet friendly manner with your dog. Sooner or later, your pet dog will certainly understand and always pee and poop at the appropriate place.
