Fundamentals of Training Your Puppy Dog
Bringing a new pet home can be an experience filled with enthusiasm and anticipation of the fun times ahead. However, you need to keep in mind that your pet may be feeling very anxious at the new environment.
You may observe that the puppy may not appear to be very friendly at first. This is because of all the nervousness and confusion of a new home and surroundings being faced by your puppy. Hence, you need to give your pet some time to get accustomed to their new lifestyle.
Always look at the puppy in his eyes. Doing this will instil confidence in your pet, and he will soon accept you as his master. Such acceptance will help you a great deal while you train your pet in the future.
Before bringing the pet home, it is a good idea to relocate all your low-lying stuff to higher place, where the dog cannot reach. Otherwise, out of curiosity your pet may end up in creating a mess out of your personal belongings. Once the pet gets adapted to the new environment, you can bring the things to their original positions.
As soon as you bring the pet home, communicate with him in a friendly yet firm tone. If you are too friendly with the pet and allow him to do anything, it will send out wrong signals to your pet. It will give an idea to the pet, that he is allowed to do anything in your home and does not have a master. Since puppies are used to living in a group, they instinctively feel a need to lead the group. Ensure that you let your pet know as to who is the boss in the house. Doing so will help you immensely in upcoming training process of your pet too.
Buying a crate for your pet is another good idea to make him feel at home. Since puppies come from the wolf family, they will appreciate having a den (crate) of their own. However, remember that a very large crate may scare your puppy. Get a small crate, with enough space for your pet to stand and that allows restricted movement. While introducing your pet to his crate, make sure to be gentle and slow.
Do not rush into training your pet. Give some time to your pet dog to get familiar with your home and family. Once your pet gets used to it, promising times will lie ahead for both of you to enjoy and cherish!
